Far Far Away

We were asked to choose the most important word in Anne Frank: the Diary of a Young Girl, find three quotes to go with it, and write a paragraph about the word. I think the easiest part for me was choosing hope and finding quotes and pictures. I think I could have improved on the colors I chose for hope and making my poster look neater. Overall, I think I did pretty well on this project, but I think I could have improved on fitting all of my work on the poster. I learned how to find good quotes that go along with a word.

I am Anne Frank

Friday, 12 June, 1942

Dear Kitty,

I have just received you today on my thirteenth birthday.  You, alone, with your beautiful plaid cover is my absolute favorite gift. Before I go on with the events of the day, I shall tell you more about myself. My name is Anne Frank, and I am thirteen years old as I have told you before. Now, I must tell you about my family: I have a sister named Margot who is three years older than me, two lovely parents, and a cat named Moortje. I think I shall call you Kitty. I believe that we shall become the best of friends over the years.

I should like to say that I am curious. I always absolutely love to learn new things, and I believe that I do try hard in school. Today, I had to control my curiosity until seven o’ clock in the morning. Of course I woke up hours earlier. Oh, Kitty, it felt so much longer than the actual time. It felt like days to me, if not that, maybe even months. It was so drab. I was so excited when I opened you; I knew we would become great friends.

Sometimes I am optimistic. Even though times are tough, I always try to see the good in things no matter what happens. I don’t want to look like a showoff, Kitty, but I think that it is the truth. Daddy has started to talk about going into hiding. I am so worried about leaving because I love my friends. I don’t know what I would do without them. Most of my free time is spent with them- playing ping pong and going to the ice cream parlor. Right now, I am just spending as much time as I can with them.

I know it isn’t good, Kitty, but I can be sarcastic at times. I guess it can be alright when I want to be funny, but making sarcastic comments all of the time isn’t that amazing. I am especially sarcastic when I am talking about the Germans. How nice they are! I absolutely detest them. It is so awful when they discriminate against us Jews. I don’t think that religion makes much of a difference. We are all human beings.

Some people think that I am cocky. I do not wish to believe them, but they can still prove it. They believe I am boy crazy, but I shan’t agree. I think that any boy who sees me will fall in love. Sometimes the boys at the ice cream parlor will buy some ice cream for mw. Kitty, I would like to know if this makes me sound cocky and boy crazy. I need to know the truth.

Well, Kitty, I hope you learned a lot about me. I have told you that I can be curious, optimistic, sarcastic, and cocky. I’m looking forward to the next time I write. I shall share events, thoughts, and darkest secrets with you. We shall be the best of friends. Goodbye for now. It is time for supper.

Yours,

Anne

Our class read The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. We were asked to write a five paragraph essay about a character we think we are most like. To do this, we had to study the character very carefully to make sure we didn’t miss anything. The character I chose was Two-Bit. I think what I did well was explaining what Two-Bit is like and finding quotes to go along with it. I think the hardest part was finding quotes that went along with the essay. During this essay, I learned how to embed quotes and use the “Bing Bang Bongo” technique for writing an essay. This has taught me many things that I will use in the future… embedding quotes and writing a five paragraph essay.

The Comedy of Two-Bit

Comedy is when someone brings laughter when there is tension. When someone is comical, they say something funny to make others feel better. People who are comical tell jokes and funny stories, do crazy tricks, create strange faces, perform in front of crowds, and make people laugh. Some comical people are actors, comedians, friends, and classmates. Two-Bit is comical in the book The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton.

Two-Bit is comical after the Socs attack Ponyboy. Ponyboy is walking home alone when he is attacked. He has many cuts on his neck when the rest of the gang finds him. Even though everyone is still worried, Two-Bit sees humor out of it. He makes the gang come together through jokes. In the book, Ponyboy says, “’Didya catch ‘em?’” Two-Bit says, “‘Nup. They got away this time the dirty…’ and Ponyboy thinks, “Two-Bit went on cheerfully, calling the Socs every name he could think of or make up.” (Page 12) This shows that Two-Bit is comical all of the time, even in stress. He is easygoing and always makes sure to make everyone feel cheerful. Two-Bit is being carefree when something bad happens shows that he is comical.

In addition, Two-Bit’s comedy is apparent when he does acrobatics off of the front porch before the big rumble. When the gang is leaving to go, they are worried about what is going to happen. They don’t know whether they or the Socs will win. The whole gang is tense except for Two-Bit. In the book, Two-Bit says, “’ Welup… I see we are in prime condition for a rumble. Is everybody happy?’ ‘Yeah!’ screamed Soda as he too did a flying somersault off the steps.” (Page 135) This shows that he has a positive attitude all day. He gets everyone ready and excited for anything to come. He makes the whole gang laugh, and that shows that he is comical.

Finally, Two-Bit’s comedy shows the most when he surprises Ponyboy and Johnny at the movie theater with Cherry Vallance and her friend Marcia. He sneaks up on them and pretends to be a Soc. Ponyboy and Johnny are scared, but when they see it is Two-Bit, they laugh. Ponyboy observes, “We were all four sitting there in silence when suddenly a strong hand came down on Johnny’s shoulder and another on mine and in a deep voice said, ‘Okay, greasers, you’ve had it.’… I looked fearfully over my shoulder and there was Two-Bit, grinning like a Chessy cat.” (Page 27) This shows that Two-Bit is creative when it comes to making jokes. He knows just what to say. Two-Bit will do almost anything to make his friends laugh.

Comedy is an important quality to have. Without people that are comical, the world and everything in it would be different. People would be glum, everything would be the same, and no one would laugh. We should appreciate that there are comical people around us, but there are times when you shouldn’t be comical. You shouldn’t be comical when you are at a funeral or when a family member is in the hospital. Sometimes it is best not to say anything funny. Two-Bit Mathews is comical in The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton.  He is comical when he insults the Socs after Ponyboy is attacked, comical when does acrobatics off of the front porch before that rumble, and comical when he scares Ponyboy and Johnny at the movie theater. Sometimes I am comical. I always try to be cheerful and funny when my friends are not happy or are not feeling well. It makes me feel horrible when people are glum and not having fun. Sometimes I am not comical, though. There are times when I am too tired or sad to be funny. I have promised myself that I will be comical no matter what happens.

Our first assignment of the year was to make Six Word Memoirs. We had to write three sentences with only six words that express myself. I think what I did well was making sure they each showed what I was like. This was also the hardest. It was very difficult to capture myself in only six words. I learned how to look deep into myself and write about it. I also learned how to choose the right words for what I want to say.
